Go Club

The Wellington Go Club offers the chance to learn and play one of the oldest and most strategic games in history. It's a great pastime and intense game to play.

The Wellington Go Club offers the opportunity to learn and play the game of Go (also known as Igo/Weiqi/Baduk) in a positive and social environment. It's simple rules take just minutes to learn but the complex game takes lifetime to master.

The game of Go was invented in ancient China thousands of years ago and later reached Korea and Japan in the 5th and 7th century CE. One player uses the white stones and the other, black. The players take turns placing the stones on the empty points of a board with a 19×19 grid of lines. Once placed on the board, stones may not be moved, but they can be removed from the board when surrounded by opposing stones on all adjacent points. The game concludes when both players pass; the territory for each player is counted along with their captured stones and komi to determine the winner.

Wellington Go Club welcomes players of all skill levels. Even if you're just curious about the game feel free to come by and find what it's all about. Get in touch and we will see you here!
