Creating an exercise routine

One size doesn’t fit all when it comes to exercise. The best exercise routine is the one you can stick with. Here are four simple steps to decide what exercise is right for you.

Do I enjoy it?

You have to enjoy it enough to push past the resistance. The opposite question is, 'do I dread it?'. If so, this routine is not for you.

Is it sustainable?

Even if you love what you’re doing, the time commitment has to be sustainable or you’ll burn out. Start with a commitment that’s manageable with your schedule.

Is there a community to support me?

There may be like-minded people in person and/or online that can help motivate you. It’s helpful to be part of conversations with people who are trying to exercise the same way as you.

Is it working?

Check your progress after two months. It should start feeling easy and a healthier and happier you.

Adding a bit of exercise into your day

Five minutes is all you need to get the mood-boosting benefits of exercise. All exercise is good exercise—try one of these to get yourself moving:

  • Dance to your favourite song
  • Walk and take the stairs to uni
  • Join a gym or sports club
  • Try yoga or Zumba
  • Try running
  • Get a bike and cycle to uni or work.
