Volunteers from the University's Fruit and Vegetable Co-op pose with produce during the weekly fruit and vege pack-out.

Fruit and vegetable co-operative

Join our fruit and vegetable co-op, volunteer with us, and enjoy fresh and affordable produce delivered to your campus each week.

The fruit and vegetable co-op is not operating over the summer holidays. Our first order collection in 2020 will be Thursday 13 February, so pay by Waitangi day, Thursday 6 February, to receive an order. If you'd like to be part of the co-op for 2020, sign up below.

Victoria University of Wellington's fruit and vegetable co-op is a non-profit social enterprise supported by the University's wellbeing teams, Victoria University of Wellington Students’ Association (VUWSA), Wesley Community Action, and Wellington Regional Public Health.

The co-op—available for staff and students—is a community of people working together to bring affordable, healthy food to our campuses. We make use of bulk buying power and our co-op members' volunteered time to package bags of fresh fruit and vegetables for our community.

Join the co-op

For $12 a week, you will receive one bag of fruit and one of vegetables, comprising of six to eight seasonal varieties. You can order as many bags as you need, as often as you like, and you can collect your order from your preferred campus.

The co-op is a community and would not be possible without the support of volunteers, so we encourage all of our co-op members to volunteer some time so we can continue to run this healthy initiative on campus.

Co-op volunteer roles include washing and packing our fabric bags, driving our delivery van, and helping other co-op members collect their weekly orders.

Some co-op members volunteer every week, some monthly, and others just when they can. If you have any spare time in your schedule and want to help provide fresh, affordable produce to staff and students, contact us at fruit-vegecoop@vuw.ac.nz or sign-up using our online roster.

How to order

Once you have registered for the co-op, you can place an order to collect from your preferred campus. Order and payment information will be sent to you by email.

It is a pre-order-and-pay system—order by 5 pm Thursday and pick up the following Thursday.

You can collect your fruit and vegetables from one of these three hubs during set times:

  • Kelburn campus: 10 am–12.30 pm, The Hunter Lounge, Level 3, Student Union Building
  • Pipitea campus: 10.30–11.30 am, Student Academic Services Ground Floor, Rutherford House
  • Te Aro campus: 11–11.30 am, outside the Architecture and Design Library's main entrance, Level 1, Vivian Street

If you are not able to collect your order during these hours, email fruit-vegecoop@vuw.ac.nz. As the produce is perishable, if your order is not collected or we don't hear from you, we are unable to store it. Orders are bought in advance, so no refunds are available.

Returnable fabric bags

The co-op is proudly plastic-bag free, with all orders packed into the co-op's returnable fabric bags, which co-op members return every week to be packed again with more fresh produce. Download our returnable bag guide to find out how this initiative works.

Register for the co-op

Register for our fruit and vegetable co-op to join our volunteer community and get access to fresh and affordable produce delivered to your campus each week.

By completing this form you are only registering for the Victoria University of Wellington Fruit and Vegetable Co-operative, not placing a fruit and vegetable order.

Once you have submitted the form, you will receive an email with information on how to place an order and our returnable bag initiative.
