Ross Tanner's varied career in the Public Service culminated in his appointment as the Deputy State Services Commissioner from 1993-2001. He has since forged a new career as a company director and as a consultant specialising in public policy, public management and governance. On 31 July 2008, Ross concluded a seven year term as Chairman of the Crown Health Financing Agency, a Crown Entity that provides debt funding (currently totalling $1.5 billion) for the capital investment projects of District Health Boards in New Zealand, and also advises them on asset and property management. He is currently engaged as adviser to the Chair of the Implementation Oversight Committee that is supervising the implementation of health sector changes announced by the current Minister of Health in September 2009.
Ross is currently a director on the New Zealand Board of MedTech Global Ltd, a listed Australasian company that specializes in software for the primary health sector, a director of Software Escrow Ltd ( a wholly owned subsidiary of the NZ Computer Society), and a member of the Board of the Legal Services Agency. He has completed terms of office as Chair of the Audit Committees for the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and the Education Review Office, and as a member of the Audit and Risk Committee for the Auditor-General. He currently chairs the Finance and Audit Committee of the Legal Services Agency, and the Audit Committee of the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology.
Ross also contributes his time and skills in a number of voluntary roles. He is Chairman of the St Peters (Wellington) Endowment Fund Trust Board, Treasurer of the NZ Harkness Fellowships Trust Board and Treasurer of the Trust Board of the Footnote Dance Company. He has just concluded tenure as the President of the Institute of Public Administration New Zealand (IPANZ).
