Academic shares crisis management expertise with mayors
Mayors across New Zealand have been learning about leadership during crises thanks to Associate Professor Daniel Laufer from the School of Marketing and International Business.
Local Government New Zealand first invited Associate Professor Laufer to share his expertise at a workshop last November. Due to the success of the workshop, he gave another this month. More than 20 people attended both workshops.
The main learning outcomes from the workshops include identifying areas to evaluate crisis management performance, enhancing an organisation’s institutional memory of a crisis, and identifying actions that will facilitate organisational learning from a crisis.
Associate Professor Laufer has previously taught a workshop on behalf of the Institute of Directors to board members in New Zealand, and delivered executive education at leading universities overseas such as the Mannheim Business School in Germany and the University of British Columbia in Canada.
He has also provided commentary about crisis management to the Wall Street Journal and currently writes a column for the NZ Herald.
“I view my role as an academic going beyond having an impact in the academic community through my publications. It’s important to engage with the business and government sectors, as well as with the general public through the media,” says Associate Professor Laufer. “All of these diverse activities not only enhance the reputation of the scholar, but also the University”.
