"The Life, Death and Legacy of Epameinondas the Great"

Presented by Dr. Kara Braithwaite-Westoby

University of Otago,  PhD (2020)

Abstract

The Theban general and statesman, Epameinondas may be credited with driving the policy of the Boeotian League in the early fourth century BC during the period often referred to as the Theban Hegemony. His actions led directly to the dismantling of Spartan imperial power and, according to some, paved the way for the rise of Macedon. In this presentation Epameinondas’ career and overall impact on Greek history will be examined while highlighting some of the major points of scholarly interest and contention. In addition, a brief survey of his legacy and reception in art and literature up to the modern day will be included.
