Demeter Chthonia at Hermione

Location: OK 526 (the Classics Museum)

Abstract This paper examines the enigmatic cult of Demeter Chthonia at Hermione.  The goddess’ unusual cult, as described by Pausanias 2.35.4-8, has attracted a great deal of attention, but there is still no consensus as to the cult’s purpose or function.  Using the Hermione cult as a focus, this paper discusses the wider issues associated with divine identity vs local influence; Demeter here should be considered in terms of the company she keeps (not only Kore but also Klymenos/Hades: Paus. 2.35.9; IG IV, 686-691) and in the context of her immediate environment (an entrance to Hades, and a ‘place’ called the Acherousian Lake: Paus. 2.35.9).  Finally, I will consider the possible meanings of the cult name Chthonia.
