About the Professorial Chair
The Professorial Chair focuses on the research and application of economics and public policy insights to disaster management.
The Chair in the Economics of Disasters and Climate Change (formerly the Chair in the Economics of Disasters) was officially launched at Wellington School of Business and Government in July 2013. The Chair provides new knowledge to guide New Zealand in the aftermath of disasters like the Canterbury earthquakes.
The first person appointed to the role was Professor Ilan Noy from the School of Economics and Finance. His research investigates economic aspects of the management of natural and other disasters.
The Chair, believed to be a world first, focuses on economic policy and disaster management. It is the result of a partnership between Victoria University of Wellington, the Earthquake Commission (EQC), and the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).
