Celebrating 150 years of the Periodic Table

2019 marks 150 years since scientist Dmitry Mendeleev created the Periodic System.

To mark this anniversary the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation has declared 2019 to the International Year of the Periodic Table, saying it is “one of the most significant achievements in science, capturing the essence not only of chemistry, but also of physics and biology.”

Royal Society Te Apārangi has created a series of videos about the role of the elements in everyday life.

As part of the series they worked with Victoria University of Wellington chemists, Professors Richard Furneaux and Emily Parker to develop two videos in celebration of how they use the periodic system in their research.
