The Energy Education Trust of New Zealand Master's Scholarships
History and purpose
The Energy Education Trust of New Zealand (EETNZ) is registered as a charitable trust for the advancement of tertiary education and research in New Zealand in disciplines relevant to New Zealand’s present and emerging energy needs. To further this mission the EETNZ established undergraduate scholarships available for full-time study in the fields of Science, Economics or Engineering and related fields but with a specific interest in energy as it relates to the energy needs of New Zealand Aotearoa. Beginning in 2021 EETNZ will extend their scholarships awarded to include five Master’s Scholarships to be offered at the six participating universities.
Who is eligible?
The EETNZ Master’s Scholarships will be available in year one to students planning to pursue a full-time Master’s degree (credit 120 points; credit 180 points; credit 240 points) in Science, Economics or Engineering and related fields but with an interest in energy as it relates to the specific needs of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Selection criteria
- Applicants must be planning to enrol full-time in a Master’s degree programme at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, undertaking research in an area which focuses on energy matters. e.g. Law, Policy, Engineering.
- Applicants must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand.
- Selection will be made by the Trustees based on academic achievement (GPA or GPE), evidence of community involvement, demonstrated motivation to succeed, relevance of the project to the EETNZ’s mission and on interview by the Trustees.
Application process
A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation
- A brief personal statement outlining your interest in or job/project experience in the study subjects related to energy
- An abstract or outline (no longer than 2,000 words) of proposed study and research objectives
- A copy of your CV
- Two references (to be requested via the online application)
Selection process
The Scholarships Office will submit eligible proposals to the EETNZ selection committee who will decide upon a shortlist of candidates to interview. If selected for an interview, the candidate will need to be available for an interview at Victoria University of Wellington at a time agreed with the Trustees. Once the EETNZ Committee has made its decision the Scholarships Office will notify the applicants.
Selection will be made by the Trustees based on academic achievement (GPA or GPE), evidence of community involvement, demonstrated motivation to succeed, relevance of the project to the EETNZ’s mission and on interview by the Trustees.
The panel will also pay close attention to the applicant's academic results as well as consideration of their demonstrated interest in or job/project experience in energy, the relevance of their current programme of study, future study and career plans.
Additional information
The successful recipient must write a thank you letter to the donor within one month of receiving the award.
The recipient will be asked to provide the Trustees with access to a report on progress at the end of year one or the second semester. This would be treated as confidential and any IP issues could be excluded.
Regulations and conditions

- All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
- The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
- The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
- Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
- Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
- At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
