History and purpose

The TDB Advisory is an independent consultancy specialising in corporate finance, economics and treasury risk management. One of TDB Advisory Directors, Phil Barry, is a graduate of Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and close friend of the School of Economics and Finance. This scholarship is for top performing third year students of Māori or Pasifika descent and majoring in Economics or Finance. It includes an offer of a summer internship at TDB Advisory in Wellington.

The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage Māori and Pasifika students, to complete an Honours or Master’s Programme in Economics or Finance.

Who is eligible?

  • Applicants must be fully enrolled at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington full-time in a Finance, Economics, Business or Commerce course.
  • Applicants must be in their third or fourth year of study and intending to progress onto Honours or Master's level.

Selection criteria

  • Māori or Pasifika descent
  • Must be currently enrolled full-time in a Finance, Economics, Business or Commerce course at Victoria University of Wellington.
  • Highest performing students in year 3 economics and finance papers will have preference.
  • Must be in the third or fourth year of study and intending to progress onto Honours or Master's.

Application process

All scholarship applications are submitted through Community Force.

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.

Scholarship specific documentation

  • Applicants will provide a personal statement outlining how they meet the criteria for the scholarship, the potential impact the scholarship would have towards their study; and future aspirations after studying.

Selection process

The successful recipient will be selected by the Undergraduate/Postgraduate Programme Leader for the Honours programme at Wellington Faculty of Business and Government in consultation with the donor. Applicants may be invited for an interview.

Additional information

  • The successful recipient is expected to write a letter of appreciation to the donor within one month of receiving the award.
  • The successful recipients may also receive the following directly from the donor following the scholarship award:
    An offer of a summer internship and/or part-time work during the study year at TDB Advisory in Wellington subject to business requirements.

Regulations and conditions

  1. A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
  2. All offers of the Scholarship will be conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered by Studylink as full-time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. No payment of the Scholarship will be made until this condition is met.
  3. The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
  4. The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
  5. Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve a satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected. Recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.
  6. Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
  7. At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
