The prize is awarded at the end of the academic year for excellence in sonic art, typically on the basis of an exceptional project or projects with a live component created in the year of the award.

This award has no cash prize. Its prestige comes from the fact that it is awarded by the composition department of the New Zealand School of Music for an outstanding student.
