Eligibility

The prize is awarded by the Dean of the Faculty of Law to the student who, at the completion of their degree, showed the most overall proficiency and promise in the field of public law.

Information

This prize arises from funds donated by friends and admirers of Sir John McGrath KNZM, QC - a former Solicitor-General of New Zealand (1989-2000), Justice of the Supreme Court of New Zealand, and Chancellor of Victoria University of Wellington, who died in October 2018. He was a much beloved member of the legal community and friend of the Faculty of Law, displaying warmth and good will to all.

Eligible students are nominated by members of the Faculty of Law and a final decision will be made by the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Law or his/her delegate. The winner will be notified by 31 March of the following year.

Winners will be asked to write a thank you letter to the donor.
