These prizes were established in 1985 and arise from a donation by Dr W G C Paterson, MD (NZ), MRCP (Lond), FRACP. The purpose of the prizes is to increase the interest in Classical Civilisation.
The prizes are for:
1. the best essay on a subject concerned with aspects of classical civilisation and its connection with the modern world as prescribed by the Director of the Classics Programme; and
2. the best essay from a student enrolled in Classical Studies at 300 or Honours level.

These prizes arise from a donation by Dr W G C Paterson, MD (NZ), MRCP (Lond), FRACP. The purpose of the prizes is to increase the interest in Classical Civilisation.

1. The prizes, two of which may be awarded annually, shall be known as the Victoria University of Wellington Essay Prizes in Classics.

2(a) One prize shall be awarded to the matriculated student in any faculty, who, in the opinion of the Chairperson of the Department of Classics, submits the best essay on a subject prescribed in Regulation 6 below, and is deemed to be worthy of the award.
2(b) A second prize shall be awarded to the student enrolled in Classical Studies, Greek or Latin, at 300 or Honours level, who, in the opinion of the Director of the Classics Programme, has submitted the best essay (other than a Research Essay) during the course of the year's study and who is deemed worthy of the award.

3. If in any year no prize worthy essay is submitted in one of the above categories, two prizes may be awarded in the other category.

4. The value of the prizes shall be determined by the Academic Board after consideration of the income from the fund.

5. If in any year only one or neither prize is awarded, the income not expended may be used at the discretion of the Council to defray the cost of publication of any essay or essays submitted for the prize, or may be added to the capital fund.

6. No candidate shall be awarded a Victoria University of Wellington Essay Prize in Classics on more than one occasion.

7(a) Competitors for the prize open to matriculated students in any Faculty shall submit their work to the Director of the Classics Programme by the end of the last week in the second semester of each year.
7(b) Subjects for the essay shall be prescribed from time to time by the Director of the Classics Programme to whom application should be made for details. The subjects will be concerned with aspects of classical civilisation and its connection with the modern world.

8. Victoria University of Wellington shall have the right to publish any essay, submitted in accordance with these regulations, which, on the recommendation of the Director of the Classics Programme, is deemed by the Publications Committee of the Academic Board to be suitable for that purpose.
