Eligibility

Students must be enrolled in Chemistry and/or Biochemistry subjects at Victoria University of Wellington Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Information

The Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry provides four prizes annually for Victoria University of Wellington Chemistry and Biochemistry students. The prizes are designed to encourage interest in Chemistry or Biochemistry as a career.

Prize will be awarded to:

  1. the best student in their first year
  2. the best student in their second year
  3. the best student at 300-level in CHEM
  4. the best student at 300-level in BCHM.

The Chemistry first year prize will be awarded on the recommendation of the Head of School of Chemical and Physical Sciences to the most meritorious student taking not less than 36 points of Chemistry in their first year of study at the University, and who intends to proceed in Chemistry or Biochemistry.

The Chemistry second year prize shall be awarded on the recommendation of the Head of School of Chemical and Physical Sciences, to a student who distinguishes him/herself in not less than 48 points from 200-level Chemistry (including both papers and practical courses) at the University, and who intends to proceed in Chemistry.

The Chemistry 300-level prize shall be awarded on the recommendation of the Head of School of Chemical and Physical Sciences, to a student who distinguishes him/herself in not less than 48 points from 300-level Chemistry (including MATS 301) at the University and shows special ability in practical work.

The Biochemistry 300-level prize shall be awarded on the recommendation of the Manager of the Cell and Molecular Biology Unit, to a student who distinguishes him/herself in 300-level courses relevant to biochemistry as determined by the School of Biological Sciences, and shows special ability in practical work.

No student may be awarded more than one prize in the same year.

Recipients will be asked to write a letter of thanks, which will be forwarded appropriately.
