Profile

Kathleen (Katie) Makale graduated from Victoria University of Wellington in 2012 with a BCA (Honours) in Accounting and Commercial Law, and was awarded the prestigious Victoria Medal for Academic Excellence. Katie has recently become a CA with Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. Presently, she is working on her PhD thesis under the supervision of Professor Judy Brown and Dr Helen Tregidga.

Katie’s PhD research is focused on the spaces of engagement and accountability relationships within a site of environmental conflict. The project involves a case study that examines how accounting could be ‘opened up’ and ‘broadened out’ through the exploration of contested notions of engagement and accountability. Specifically her research is focused on the development of new ‘dialogic’ forms of accounting that allow non-shareholder groups, in particular Indigenous communities, to construct accountings that take into account their own knowledge systems, including their own political and value standpoints.
