Profile

Hamish graduated with an LLB(Hons) from Auckland University in 1993. He spent two years at the New Zealand Law Commission researching aspects of private law with a view to law reform. Thereafter, he spent two and a half years writing a doctoral thesis on the restraint of trade doctrine at common law at Auckland University (awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Prize for best doctoral thesis in law), and teaching contract law and equity. He practised law at the Wellington office of Chapman Tripp until 2004, at the Crown Law Office until 2013, and then as a barrister sole. His research interests lie primarily in private law (property, contract, and equity), but he also has an interest in analytical jurisprudence and statutory interpretation. His most recent publication is “The Confusion of Incidents of Common Carriage with Incidents of Deviation” [2016] LMCLQ 275-305.
