Dr Simon Granville

Dr Simon Granville is an experimental materials research physicist with experience in the physics of materials and nanostructures for electronic devices, particularly for spintronics and magnetic sensing.
He completed his PhD at Victoria University of Wellington in 2006 and then undertook a postdoc at the Institute of Nanostructure Physics at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne from 2007 to 2010.
Simon is a MacDiarmid Institute Associate Investigator and a scientist in the Robinson Research Institute. He is also an Adjunct Research Associate at the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences at Victoria University of Wellington, where he is involved in the rare-earth nitrides thin film research project.
His specialty areas of expertise are electronic transport properties and magnetism, with magnetic sensors being his main field of current research. He is mostly involved in preparing and characterising the advanced thin film materials and sensor structures for this programme, as well as managing the project administration and reporting requirements.
Simon has previously supervised student projects from third year to PhD level and managed research labs and equipment. He currently co-manages the magnetics lab at the Robinson Research Institute including the SQUID magnetometer and PPMS (physical property management system) equipment. He has co-written several funded research proposals, published 34 journal articles and has an h-index of nine.
