‘Oceania is epitomised in the wisdom of my Papa and the words of my forbearers… ‘Kia akakoromaki…’ which means, be calm. Oceania reassures us that everything will be okay. It is good to wait on her, reflect, and then make it happen!’

I’m Kura. After having completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in International Relations and Pacific Studies, and more recently a Bachelor of Honours in Pacific Studies, I will shortly start a Master's programme. It was definitely Pacific Studies that got me through my first year because it hit close to home.

Culture and language and finding out who you are does matter. The Pasifika Students' Council and Cook Islands Student Association were great too.

I came to Victoria University of Wellington because my Aunty Myra came here. It has the best politics and international relations school. Being close to Parliament and government means this is where everything happens politically. University was something that was always on my ‘to do' list. I used to worry a lot, but I know that we can overcome.

A typical day starts the night before when I get all my school work ready. I wake up, have breakfast, walk to Uni and attend classes, tutorials and more classes. I make sure I have time to exercise. I have some down time; at home I watch TV or listen to music, and socialize with friends. Before I sleep I revise all my notes and reflect on the day.

My advice for niu students? I encourage people to not be afraid to stand up or stand out. My Papa’s advice to me and what I would like to pass on to everyone is the ‘one night party, two day study’ rule. This formula is from my (grandfather) Papa Rangi Moeka’a. I think it’s good advice!
