Anna was a lecturer at the University of Papua New Guinea when she decided to further her studies to gain a PhD in Education in Wellington.

Anna Joskin, from Papua New Guinea, came to Victoria University of Wellington after completing a Masters in English Language Teaching overseas.

Anna was an English lecturer at the University of Papua New Guinea prior to coming to Wellington, but wanted to further her studies to gain a Doctoral degree in Education.

Anna moved here with her son in 2008, and received her PhD in 2013. In Anna’s spare time, she shared her experiences as a single parent full-time student, budgeting and time management with other international NZAID students, and was also involved in the Pacific Leadership cluster under the mentorship of Dr Cherie Chu and Associate Professor Kabini Sanga.

Anna thinks Wellington is a great place to live and study in. She says its compact geographical nature makes it easy to get around without getting lost. The professional growth that Anna has experienced through gaining new research skills, networking and being offered conference attendance and seminar presentation opportunities has been an enriching part of her studies at the University.

She also thanks Student Learning Support and the Pasifika Advisor there for playing their part in her success. Anna has returned to her home country of Papua New Guinea and is continuing on at the University of Papua New Guinea as a lecturer in the English Communication and Literature Strand of the School of Social Science and Humanities.

Anna’s advice to Pasifika students is to “be committed to your studies and to prioritize your activities”.
