Economists at War: How a Handful of Economists Helped Win and Lose the World Wars
Oxford University Press, 2019.
Wartime is not just about military success. Economists at War tells a different story—about a group of remarkable economists who used their skills to help their countries fight their battles during the Second Sino–Japanese War, World War II, and the Cold War.
'Economists at War', chapter in The Economics of the Second World War: Eighty Years On
Stephen Broadberry, Mark Harrison (editors), Vox EU, 2020.
The World Wars of the 20th century precipitated unprecedented economic problems in all countries. This column, part of a Vox debate on the economics of WWII, describes how economists played a larger role in WWII than in any previous conflict. They advanced the methods of public finance and influenced the directions of the war effort. By the end of the war, economists were widely embedded in government and policymaking.
