Lunchtime Concert: Music for Two Pianos and Percussion
Jian Liu, Gabriela Glapska, Sam Rich and Naoto Segawa present two contrasting pieces for two pianos and percussion written in the first half of the 20th century - Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion by Béla Bartók and Rapsodie Espagnole by Maurice Ravel. This unusual combination of instruments displays both a fair share of challenges for all the performers involved as well as introduces a fascinating palette of colours and timbres It is worth remembering that the piano is technically a percussion instrument itself, and the pieces are in essence percussion quartets.
