National Piano Competition Finalists

In this concert, we feature three young pianists from Wellington who have been selected as finalists in the National Piano Competition.
Otis Prescott-Mason is 17 years old and is currently attending St Patrick’s College Town where he is in his final year. Otis began learning the piano at the age of 5 and has been studying with Dr. Jian Liu and Emma Sayers since 2018. He also intends to study classical piano at Victoria University in 2021. Aside from solo playing Otis enjoys playing chamber music as well as teaching piano.

Completing his 4th year at Wellington College, Ning Chin is a young pianist based in Wellington where he began studying piano at the age of nine. Since then, he has competed in several piano competitions such as the Judith Clark Sonata Celebration, the Wellington Piano Recital Competition as well as the Hutt Valley Piano Competition. As a pianist, Ning has performed in St. Andrews on the Terraces and the Adam Concert Room as part of the Young Musicians Programme. Aside from his musical pursuits, Ning is an avid math student and enjoys problem-solving in his spare time.

William Berry began playing piano on his own before starting school and started having lessons at the age of 5 with Elizabeth Marrison. That was 11 years ago and since then he has completed all levels of his piano examinations up to and including his licentiate examination obtaining the highest grades available. He is currently taught by Gillian Bibby and Jian Liu and enjoys exploring (and ‘robustly discussing’) both the standard and less standard piano repertoire. He currently attends Hutt Valley High School as a year 13 student and actively participates in all facets of school life. For the past 2 years, he has been the top student in both levels 1 and 2 NCEA combined across all subjects. He has been playing saxophone at school informally as a second instrument and will be sitting NCEA level 3 performance in this instrument this year.
