New event series curated by NZSM's David Barnard
The Collaborative Pianist series, curated by David Barnard and presented by the New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī, at Victoria University of Wellington, aims to showcase repertoire and the diverse skill-set of the modern classical pianist.
David Barnard is the newly appointed Head Accompanist and Vocal Coach at the New Zealand School of Music (NZSM). Originally a series of four events—the first two postponed due to Level 4 Lockdown—David is joined in concert by colleagues from the New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
The series contains repertoire from Mozart through to New Zealand composers, each concert with a set theme. The next (now first) concert titled The Lost Ideals of Youth contains repertoire from composers who wrote the highlighted repertoire in their late teens or early 20’s, with no political or religious agenda. It highlights their desire to write music for personal meaning or for a particular person in mind. The concert also showcases the joy of performing with two to three pianists at one piano (four to six hands), and the perils or humour with which this collaboration style creates. David, of noted international success, will be joined by NZSM Head of Piano, Jian Liu and NZSM Lecturer, Hamish Robb—both of whom also bring international experience to the training of pianists at the NZSM and the importance of collaborative skills.
Members of the public, students and parents of aspiring young musicians are encouraged to enter these concert spaces, in the beautiful surrounds of the Hunter Council Chamber, seated in-the-round.
David says audiences will be able to “enjoy 60 minutes of mindfulness, allowing the music to transport them wherever they choose to go.”
