Professor Vanessa Burholt

Professor Vanessa Burholt (BSc, PhD, FAcSS) is Professor of Gerontology in the School of Nursing/School of Population Health, Faculty of Health and Medicine.

Vanessa’s research focuses on older people’s attachment to people and places and she has published on rurality, loneliness, support networks, intergenerational relationships, ethnicity and migration.  Vanessa has been working with colleagues in India since 1999, helping to establish research centres and teaching programmes on ageing and gerontology. She is presently an advisor on the SUNRISE project installing solar building for off-grid communities in India), with a special remit for co-production and community engagement. Vanessa is also currently writing up research with colleagues at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in Tamil Nadu on Social transformations in India: Pathways to residential care for older people in Tamil Nadu.

Amongst her publications are  Exploring inter, intra-generational and transnational patterns of family caring in ethnic minority communities: The example of England and Wales.
