Dr Jane Buckingham

Jane Buckingham is an Associate Professor in History and Director of Graduate Studies at Canterbury University.

She is an historian of medicine and law and of Indian history, particularly social and religious history.

In 2002, Jane published her book, Leprosy in Colonial South India: Medicine and Confinement. She was the principal investigator for the Marsden Project: 'Community and Isolation, a Social and Contemporary History of Leprosy in the South Pacific' from 2008-2011. Her studies on leprosy in the Pacific are extensive, and she is the project manager for the Pacific Leprosy Foundation Oral History Archive, which archives the life stories of leprosy sufferers from the South Pacific region.

She has recently presented papers at the Greater Bay Area Consortium for Disability Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and at a Maastricht University conference on the comparative history of public health policies, in Suriname, South America.
