Dr Giacomo Lichtner
Dr Giacomo is currently the Associate Dean (Students) in the Wellington Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Giacomo Lichtner is a senior lecturer in History at Victoria University of Wellington. He is an expert in History and Film, with a specific interest on the ‘double historicity’ of historical films: that is film’s ability to comment simultaneously on past and present, to mediate between them, and to engage audiences in a conversation that is revealing of broader societal attitudes to history.
His interest in Indian historical cinema pertains to the role of film in the political and cultural construction of national memories, and specifically to representation of empire and Partition. With Sekhar Bandyopadhyay, he has published research on Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan and Deepa Mehta’s Earth in the distinguished international journal, Asian Survey.
