Dr Desai is undergraduate program director in the School of Government at Victoria University of Wellington.

Jaikishan Desai is a senior lecturer in the School of Government, and deputy director of the Health Services Research Centre at Victoria University of Wellington.

He has conducted research on various issues in economic development including poverty, food security, health, population, agricultural reforms, and gender in a number of developing countries.

His research on India has examined the economic impact of an infectious disease (kala azar) on the economic well-being of poor households in Bihar, and the changing role of the private sector in the provision of female sterilisation. Most of his research is quantitative, with some new theoretical work on health behaviour.
