Victoria arts students learning from the best

Thousands of Victoria University of Wellington students are learning from the best, according to the latest world university rankings.

Victoria’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is the largest faculty of its type in New Zealand. Four of its subjects are ranked in the top 100 in the QS World University rankings—English Language and Literature, History, Linguistics and Sociology.

“In addition, our Communications and Media Studies subject has been ranked top in New Zealand—an outstanding result,” according to Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Faculty of Education Professor Jennifer Windsor. Victoria is also one of the universities in New Zealand that is first equal in History.

“We have long been talking about the value of studying humanities and these subjects are proven to be up with the best internationally. The value of studying arts is that it offers our students fundamental insights and multiple perspectives about cultures, societies and languages—all particularly important in the contemporary world. That’s part of why the Humanities and Social Sciences, and Education, are very strong at Victoria.”

Education also received recognition in the latest rankings as being in the top 100 universities for this subject in the world.

“Our teaching is student-focused and research-led. It helps students develop flexibility, creativity, imagination, and critical and analytical thinking skills—all attributes New Zealand needs.”

In total, Victoria University of Wellington was ranked among the world’s top 100 universities in 11 subjects, and among the world’s top 150 universities in a further six subjects. This overall result confirmed Victoria’s standing as a globally ranked, capital city university.
