Kate convenes the Fiction stream of CREW 591 MA in Creative Writing Te Kohinga Auaha

She graduated with an MA in Creative Writing from Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington in 2000. Her MA project became her first novel, Breakwater (Te Herenga Waka University Press). Kate has also published short fiction, poetry and reviews for a variety of journals and publications including as Takahē, Landfall, Sport, The Penguin Book of the Contemporary New Zealand Short Story, The Six Pack and New Zealand Books.

Kate has held a number of residencies including the Robert Burns Fellowship in 2004, and a Michael King Writer's Centre residency in 2021.

She completed her PhD in Creative Writing at the IIML in 2017. Her creative project for that degree was her novel The New Ships (VUP), which went on to be shortlisted for the 2019 Acorn Fiction Prize at the Ockham Book Awards. Her critical project looked at ethics and point of view in Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead.

Kate joins our permanent teaching staff from 2022, having previously taught the MA Fiction workshop in 2008, 2019 and 2021.
