Te Kawa a Māui student wins second place in the 2020 Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Summer Intern Competition

Te Kawa a Māui student Kelly Mitchell (Ngāti Māhanga, Waikato Tainui) was awarded second place in the 2020 Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Summer Intern Competition.

Kelly’s summer project examines tapu, noa and the treatment of Māori gender roles in literature. From a total of thirty projects, she was announced as one of just three finalists for the competition. Kelly is currently pursuing a Conjoint Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Law degree, where her BA majors are both Māori Studies and Te Reo Māori.

Kelly was awarded a Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga summer internship at the end of 2019, for which supervisor Dr Vini Olsen-Reeder was privileged to work alongside her over summer: “Kelly was a pleasure to collaborate with, and I’m so happy she was awarded an internship. Her mahi is critical to a wider project on language proficiency and well-being, and I’m rapt she is a finalist alongside two other great candidates. It’s one thing to see success in your own student, but to see her work recognised by esteemed Māori academics at Ngā Pae is fantastic”. Vini is incredibly indebted to Ngā Pae for funding the internship, as well as this competition.
