What are you currently teaching?

I'm currently teaching Māori language and customs.

Courses include:

Tell us about your approach to teaching. What do you enjoy most about teaching at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington?

I think what is taught needs to be useful to students and their whānau outside of the classroom. Learning language and customs should engage tauira in the Māori world and give them the tools to continue that journey when they leave the University. I enjoy teaching because of the interaction with students. It can be hard work but it is energizing, challenging, often funny and I learn a lot. I also enjoy being part of a talented, clever and committed team in Māori Studies.

What is your best piece of advice to current or prospective students?

Whaia te iti kahurangi, hei oranga māu, mā tō whānau, mā tātou.
