Join our Language Buddy programme and get matched with another student so you can learn each other’s languages.

The Language Buddy programme will be offered again in Trimester 1 2021. Please check back here then to sign up.

What’s involved

The Language Buddy Programme can be whatever you want it to be; you and your buddy can choose when, where and how often you meet up, and the activities you do together. You can practise for your speaking test, ask for advice on written assignments, or watch a film together.

You don't need to do any paperwork, though some Language Buddies like to note down new expressions to help them later. You may be asked to complete an online survey. This provides our staff with valuable information about your Language Buddy experience.

Getting a buddy

We make every effort to match you with a buddy. Applications for the Language Buddy Programme are voluntary, therefore we can't guarantee that a buddy will be available. If a buddy can’t be found for you, you’ll receive an email from us.

You’re welcome to put up an advertisement on the noticeboard opposite the Language Learning Centre reception counter to try to find yourself a language buddy. You can download this finding a language exchange partner pdf183KB to help you with your advertisement. You can also check out other advertisements on the noticeboard to find someone suitable and get in touch with them directly.

Other ways to connect people who speak your target language

Websites such as Italki and Busuu can help you connected with other learners and native speakers from around the world. You could also try joining one of the many language clubs on campus.

Wellington Plus and WILP

By being a Language Buddy you can gain experiential points for Wellington Plus and/or Wellington International Leadership Programme (WILP).
