Project update: bus stop changes

In May 2021 we made a Traffic Resolution application to Wellington City Council to move the Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington - Stop A bus stop on Kelburn Parade (bus stop #4915).

Two large villas next to a road with two cars waiting at traffic lights.

We have proposed that the bus stop moves slightly further down Kelburn Parade to between the two sets of pedestrian traffic lights and has a larger bus shelter built.

Why are we moving the bus stop?

The current bus shelter location is nearby to deconstruction taking place to make room for the Living Pā. We want to move the bus stop to ensure its users are kept safe.

The Living Pā’s main entry will be where the bus shelter is currently located, with a ramp and stairs for access into the main gathering space. By relocating the bus stop, building access and wayfinding will be much clearer.

Currently, congestion at times of pōwhiri is an ongoing health and safety issue for the University. The proposed bus stop relocation will separate the main entrance to the marae and new building from those waiting for a bus.

Our new building will be naturally ventilated and have windows opening onto Kelburn Parade. By moving the bus stop, impact of noise and pollutants into the building will be reduced.

Where is the change at?

We have submitted a traffic resolution (PDF) to Wellington City Council which will be reviewed in August. Once a decision has been made, we will update this page. If approved, we will be moving the bus stop in September.

If you’re interested in providing feedback on the proposed change (PDF), you can do this through the Wellington City Council’s website until Sunday 11 July. Your basic information including name, suburb, and Yes/No to the proposal will be shared publicly if the proposal goes ahead for approval.

We are working with the Council, Metlink, the Greater Wellington Regional Council, students, and staff to ensure we achieve a positive result for everyone.
