Expert opinion—The Waitangi Tribunal's decision to issue a summons to Minister for Children, Karen Chhour, after her refusal to provide evidence behind the decision to repeal section 7AA of the Oranga Tamariki Act, has led crown lawyers to seek a judicial review of the summons in the High Court. Ministers Shane Jones and David Seymour, are now openly criticising the tribunal, putting them in breach of the Cabinet Manual conventions. Dr Dean Knight, Professor of public law at the Faculty of Law, Victoria University of Wellington, says he is "deeply concerned" that, in this case, the ministers have failed to exercise the required careful judgment before commenting on judicial decisions, as is laid out in the Cabinet Manual. Well done Isla Clarkson and Jimmy Fiso- your experience in Poland will have been enriching beyond belief.
Myself and Jimmy Fiso spent last week in Lublin, Poland at the Brown Mosten International Client Consultation Competition as a result of winning the national NZLSA x IPLS Client Interviewing Competition last year. It was a privilege to represent New Zealand at this competition and an honour to simply attend. The topic for this year was international humanitarian law which is very pertinent at the moment and was therefore a brilliant opportunity to learn more about this discipline. We began the competition with workshops and panels on working with clients who have suffered severe trauma and the impact of war generally which was very insightful. Whilst we were disappointed to not progress to the end of the competition we were grateful for the opportunity to put our soft skills to the test and learn more about an important discipline. We grappled with issues including; reporting war crimes, possession and distribution of objectionable material, immigration and asylum, cyber war crimes etc. It was an intense but interesting area of the law! My highlight of the competition was meeting fellow law students from all parts of the world. It was super interesting to hear about their experiences at their respective law schools and programmes and of course was great to make new friends. I am very grateful to have had this experience which wouldn’t have been possible without the help and contributions of: Faculty of Law, Victoria University of Wellington, The Victoria University of Wellington Foundation, and Kate Sheppard Chambers. We were very grateful to have some training before attending and would like to thank past competitors Lydia Whyte and Alice Wood, along with Associate Professor Selene Mize of Otago University for supporting us at the competition.

The Faculty of Law, Victoria University of Wellington paid homage to Professor David McLauchlan (or "D-Mac" as he is affectionately known by his students), on the occasion of his very last lecture here at Law School. He was "clapped out" and cheered out of LT2, looking surprised and very moved. As one of his third-year students said, "D-Mac is the reason why Contract Law is my favourite subject, it's really sad to see him go". Thanks to all the staff and students who turned up to make this such a special moment. #celebratingteachers #StudyWellington #FacultyOfLaw Victoria University of Wellington

Heads up students at Faculty of Law, Victoria University of Wellington #laws340 #laws397
If you are looking for an internship in the area of international law or know someone who might be, this new resource might be of interest: https://lnkd.in/epNggZxe Following a lively discussion over on Twitter, we have compiled many of existing internship and work experience opportunities in a publicly accessible online format. They include international courts and tribunals, various international organizations, as well as NGOs. Every item on the list contains a direct link to the relevant institution where you can find out more and apply. I am grateful to Exeter Law School student Dylan Karssens for taking the lead on this initiative. While primarily drafted for the international law community at Exeter, the list will likely be useful more broadly. Please feel free to share it further!

Law Society President, Frazer Barton, spoke with RNZ host, Kathryn Ryan, this morning about the recently released Costs of Practice report. Frazer commented “It's now more difficult to retain staff, which could result in even more people being forced to represent themselves in court”. Listen to the interview here https://lnkd.in/gk9r6W67
