David Crabbe worked in the field of language curriculum development, with a special interest in learner autonomy. His most recent work has been in defining the quality of learning opportunities and how teachers and learners might describe and manage these opportunities. He also has a long-standing interest in ESP and has several times acted as a consultant on ESP programmes in Southeast Asia. He teaches on the MA programme, supervises research and has played a key role in developing the direct language teaching programme at Victoria. He has held posts at the Regional Language Centre in Singapore, Lancaster University in England, Bayero University in Kano, Nigeria and as a lecteur in Nancy, France.
