Wellington University International Summer Leadership Camp

International high school students can develop leadership and study skills in January 2021.

International students who are studying at high school in New Zealand, or have just finished their study, can join us on campus for a month-long camp during the summer holidays.

This camp aims to develop your leadership, interpersonal, and study skills. For high school graduates, it will also give you a smooth transition into university study.

This 4-6-week programme is open to Year 11, 12, and 13 International High School students. Year 13 students can also extend their learning through one of the University’s first-year Mathematics or Writing courses.

What the programme offers

The 2021 Leadership Camp will present workshops from a range of academics and industry professionals as well as fun, supervised activities that allow students to explore the Wellington region.

  • a supportive and personalised learning environment
  • highly qualified, caring, and experienced facilitators
  • an opportunity to develop your leadership, interpersonal, and study skills
  • an opportunity to make new friends, have fun, and learn something new over summer.

Study options

Years 11 and 12

Year 11 and 12 students will engage in a range of leadership and learning development sessions each day in the morning such as critical thinking, careers and job search, public speaking, leadership, and study skills. These sessions will be followed by fun activities around Wellington in the afternoon such as an amazing race, outdoor conservation, rock climbing and many more!

Year 13

Year 13 students can engage in the same programme as the year 11 and 12 students or they can select a credit-bearing university course in Mathematics (STAT193) or Writing (WRIT151).

These university courses will count towards your undergraduate degree.

When

The programme runs for 4 weeks in January 2021 for all students. Year 13 students who choose to study a university course as part of their camp programme will complete a further two weeks.

  • Tuesday 5–Sunday 31 January 2021 (Years 11, 12, 13)
  • Monday 1–Sunday 14 February 2021 (Year 13 optional study extension)

Where

The Wellington University International Summer Leadership Camp will be held at the University's Kelburn Campus and around the Wellington region.

Timetable

The same timetable will be followed each day, Monday to Friday.

  • 9 am–noon: classes and workshops
  • noon–1 pm: lunchbreak on campus
  • afternoon: supervised activities on campus or around the Wellington region.

Year 13 students who select a credit-bearing university course will attend the same leadership sessions and afternoon activities as the other students. The credit-bearing course work would replace the study skills workshops each morning.

For students who will be living outside of Wellington, we will arrange catered accommodation for you with either a host family in Wellington or at a catered university hall. This option is available for Year 13 students only.
