Profile

Professor Simpson is a trained epidemiologist working in the field of population health sciences and medical informatics carrying out internationally recognised research to improve the health and well-being of patients and populations. Prior to his current appointment as the Professor of Population Health, Prof. Simpson held the post of Reader and Director of Innovation at the Usher Institute, College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at The University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom. He has published over 90 research papers.

Supervision Interests

Prof. Simpson. is interested in supervising students for projects with a focus on data science in health and evaluation of complex interventions.

Research Interests

Prof. Simpson's research expertise is focused on respiratory disease including asthma, COPD and influenza. His other research interests are medical informatics, quality and safety in healthcare and advanced data analytics.

Current Projects

Prof Simpson has supervised three PhD students to completion. Topics included: therapeutic adherence and outcome in childhood asthma, data synthesis using health services data, and regional, national and international projections for the incidence and prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He has been a named investigator on 39 externally funded research projects.
