Immersive ‘Research School’ for nursing and midwifery students
Masters, PhD and doctoral students will have the opportunity to present research and grow their scholarship skills over three days in an upcoming event hosted by the School of Nursing, Midwifery, and Health Practice.
Taking place online from 27 – 29 October, the event aims to support and encourage students conducting research. Each student is expected to present in front of an audience and take part in question time focused around their research.
Dr Liz Smythe, a Professor from AUT's Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences - Te Ara Hauora A 
Pūtaiao, is the visiting scholar for the event, and will be joining via Zoom. She will offer reflection and inquiry after each of the students’ research presentations, and deliver two lectures, ‘Discerning the difference in qualitative approaches’ and ‘How the methodology shapes everything’. Prof Smythe began her own student journey in the mid-80s “in an era when colleagues were astounded that nurses and midwives should consider there was anything to be gained by having a degree” and is now a highly respected teacher who has been at the forefront of developments in masters and doctoral studies. She has supervised over 50 theses.
A truly international event, the Research School will see Master’s students joining online from Samoa, Ghana and Ethiopia. Staff from the Wellington Faculty of Health will offer teaching sessions also, including Dr Aliitasi Su’a-Tavila and Dr Caz Hales.
Dr Deborah Harris, senior lecturer at the School of Nursing, Midwifery, and Health Practice, says that the biannual event is an important part of the school calendar.
“Research School provides an opportunity for our research students to test ideas and showcase their work in a supportive and nurturing scholarly environment.”
Prizes will be awarded to students for the Best Presentation – Masters, and Best Presentation – Doctoral Programmes.
