The Awards honour theatrical achievements and artistic excellence, and this year centred around the theme of Our Voice, marking 125 years of women’s suffrage. The evening was hosted by Jo Randerson, artistic director of Barbarian Production and guest lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington.

Demonstrating the broad range of career pathways available in the theatre sector, the awards won by the Victoria University graduates also display the connections with Wellington’s creative industries that the University’s Theatre programme can offer.

Trae Te Wiki, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours (BA(Hons)) in Theatre in 2015, was awarded the Willem Wassenaar Most Promising Newcomer Award for both Acting (Hine Kahāwai) and Writing (Beneath Skin and Bone).

Rachel Marlow (BA in Theatre and History, BA(Hons) in History, 2008) won Lighting Designer of the Year for her work on Wild Dogs Under My Skirt and Peter and the Wolf.

Eleanor Bishop (BA Hons) in Theatre, 2009) and Karin McCracken (BA in Theatre and Religious Studies, Bachelor of Laws, 2014) respectively directed and acted in Jane Doe (Zanetti Productions), which won the award for The Absolutely Positively Most Original Production of the Year.

Associate Professor David O’Donnell of Victoria University’s Theatre programme said: “We’re very proud of our award-winning graduates who demonstrate the value of studying theatre in a university which integrates theory and practice. This leads to graduates having the confidence and skills to become great collaborators and to push boundaries in creating original, innovative performance work.”
