As one of New Zealand’s most significant research institutions, the University spends a substantial proportion of its total budget on research. It has scholars of national and international repute working in a diverse range of disciplines, both within their schools and in collaboration with the many research centres and institutes that the University hosts.

Researchers publish in leading international journals and with the top academic publishers. In 2018, the work of the University’s researchers led to more than 2534 publications.


The University has a vibrant and diverse postgraduate community. Of the University’s more than 21,000 students, around 3400 come from overseas, from over 100 different countries. We have more than 2100 full-time-equivalent staff, with over 1000 of those involved in teaching and research. About half of our academic staff were born outside of New Zealand.


The University is committed to providing a quality experience for its doctoral candidates. Here at the Wellington Faculty of Graduate Research we facilitate a number of services and resources for doctoral candidates at the University.

In addition to the research and study-related facilities that are available to doctoral candidates, the Victoria University of Wellington Students’ Association (VUWSA) provides for a range of cultural, recreational, sporting and social activities. The University also has an active Postgraduate Students' Association, which works closely with University administration to ensure the best possible research experience.

Capital city life

Victoria University of Wellington is located in Wellington—New Zealand’s political, cultural and creative capital. Our three campuses are close to the central city, and handy to Te Papa Tongarewa (the national museum), Archives New Zealand, the National Library and many other research institutions.

Wellington is built on hills surrounding a beautiful natural harbour. The city has an excellent public transport network, a fantastic cafe culture and provides an abundance of entertainment opportunities and possibilities for outdoor recreation.
