Support and services

The University offers a range of services that support you as you're getting started on your doctoral study.

Your supervisors and your school, centre, or institute will help you get started on your PhD or professional doctorate. There are also a number of university-wide services that can support you, including the Wellington Faculty of Graduate Research.

Orientation workshops

The Wellington Faculty of Graduate Research runs orientation workshops for new doctoral candidates.

The University's Student Learning team has a range of programmes for new students. Your school may also run discipline-specific courses or workshops.

Your workspace

The University is committed to providing research students with the resources they need to complete their projects. Governed by the Resource Agreement for Thesis Students you are entitled to resources including office or laboratory space, furniture, a computer, and access to all relevant University systems.

Postgraduate Students’ Association

The organisation that represents doctoral (and other postgraduate) students is the Postgraduate Students’ Association (PGSA). Run by fellow students, the PGSA offers social events, thesis writing support groups, and opportunities to practice academic speaking.

Membership is optional. If you wish to join, you will be required to pay a subscription fee after you enrol as a doctoral candidate.

Wellington University International

Wellington University International is the part of the University that looks after international students. They provide a range of services for international students, including a meeting service when you arrive, help with accommodation, and advice on visa requirements and paying your fees.

Accommodation

The University offers residential halls in a range of different configurations, including studio apartments and group houses that may appeal to postgraduate students. Our Accommodation Service can help you find a place to stay, whether it's in a hall, homestay, or privately rented.

Childcare

University Kids Wellington runs two early childhood education centres, located at either end of our Kelburn campus. They provide a welcoming environment for your child, where they can play, learn, and make friends in a safe and stimulating environment.
