From leading the country’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic to year-in, year-out supporting communities around the country, public servants are involved in all aspects of life in Aotearoa New Zealand.
The sector is Wellington’s biggest employer and it offers some of the most interesting roles in the city, if not the country.
We invite alumni who work in the public sector, or are interested in working in the public sector, to come along to this breakfast event at the Wellington School of Business and Government on Bunny Street.
Hear a panel of your fellow alumni discuss their career paths and what skills are essential for a successful career in the public sector. They'll also talk about what future trends they see impacting the sector and what skills will be needed in the future. Hear their tips on how to secure that first or second job in a ministry or crown entity.
There’ll be plenty of time to answer your questions too.
Hosted by Professor Michael Macaulay from the School of Government and held in conjunction with the Institute of Public Administration New Zealand (IPANZ), this event is an opportunity to meet and chat with your fellow alumni and IPANZ new professionals.

Speaker Bios
Matalena Leaupepe
Director, Government Centre Dispute Resolution, MBIE
Matalena is the Director for the Government Centre for Dispute Resolution. She is currently on a secondment in Immigration NZ leading the Pacific Migration team which facilitates the Recognised Seasonal Employer Scheme and Pacific migration work. She supported many young public servants and aspiring public servants in her career and in 2018 was awarded a New Zealand Public Service Medal for her work establishing the Tupu Tai internship programme to support more Pacific graduates into the sector.
Ralph Hall
Senior Research and Policy Advisor, Green Party
A graduate of the University of Auckland, Ralph completed a postgraduate certificate in Public Policy at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington part-time while at the Ministry of Justice. His time there included two secondments – to the Electoral Commission and the Cabinet Office – before moving to the Treasury in 2017 as a Senior Analyst. He is currently a Senior Research and Policy Advisor for the Green Party and acted as Ministerial Advisor to Hon. Eugenie Sage last term.
Sophie Austin
Senior Advisor, Tatauranga Aotearoa (Stats NZ)
Sophie Austin has recently re-joined the public service after returning to Wellington from the UK. Currently a Senior Advisor at Statistics New Zealand, she’s also worked as an investigator at the Commerce Commission, a Permissions Advisor at the Department of Conservation and as a Statistical Analyst at Statistics NZ. Passionate about the public service, she joins the panel representing IPANZ (the Institute of Public Administration New Zealand), where she sits on the committee for IPANZ Young Professionals in a volunteer capacity. Sophie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Economics and Business Law from the University of Portsmouth.
