Jack Body Memorial Fund

Support the future of New Zealand music through the composer residency.

Jack Body established the composer-in-residence scheme at the New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī (NZSM) in 2004, one of only two annual composer residencies in New Zealand. Sixteen composers have since been appointed, seven of whom returned to New Zealand after living abroad specifically to take up the residency.

The role was created to foster New Zealand musical composition by providing the appointee with the opportunity to compose full time for a year. The scheme offers the composer excellent professional opportunities, including publishing opportunities with Wai-te-ata Music Press, video recordings of works through SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music, and the ability to work closely with NZSM performers, composers, and students. The more than 50 major new works range from operas, orchestral works, jazz ensemble pieces, film and TV scores to those for taonga puoro, experimental music theatre pieces, and works involving musical robots.

"I am extremely thrilled and grateful to have this opportunity to return to Wellington and focus on creating new works. Wellington has inspired several of my pieces so far, and I am beyond excited to feel its energy again and reconnect with its creative community through the NZSM."
Salina Fisher, Composer in Residence 2019

Funding for the composer-in-residence scheme has changed in recent years. With your support, we can provide essential financial security for the scheme’s long-term success and ensure Jack Body’s legacy endures.

Victoria University of Wellington is establishing the Jack Body Memorial Fund, an endowed fund that will generate interest to fund half the annual salary for the composer in residence at the New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī.

To ensure the composer-in-residence scheme can continue to help composers, students, and performers, we are seeking donors of all levels to contribute to the Jack Body Memorial Fund.
