Jeff Sigafoos received his PhD in educational psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1990. Since then he has held academic appointments at the University of Queensland, University of Sydney, and The University of Texas at Austin. He currently holds a Professorship in the School of Education at Victoria University of Wellington and an Adjunct Professorship at James Madison University in Virginia, USA. Professor Sigafoos has authored numerous journal articles, book chapters, books describing the results of his research on educational and behavioural interventions for individuals with developmental and physical disabilities. He currently serves on the editorial board of 10 scientific journals and is co-editor-in-chief of Evidence-based Communication Assessment and Intervention.

Research interests

  • Education of children with developmental and physical disabilities, including autism spectrum disorders
  • Communication assessment and intervention for individuals who require augmentative and alternative communication
  • The use of assistive technology to teach adaptive skills and facilitate therapy goals
  • The assessment and treatment of severe behaviour problems in individuals with developmental disabilities

I am interested in supervising postgraduate and PhD thesis research in the area of communication intervention for children with autism and other developmental disabilities.
