EdD presentation:Researching the Learners’ Experience of Vitual Reality in the Architectural Design Studio

15WRA Room 101, Kelburn Campus

We invite you to attend the oral presentation of the School of Education EdD candidate, Tane Moleta.  His supervisor is Joanna Higgins.

Virtual Reality as a tool to support education has seen an increasing research focus in contemporary scholarship; however, for the architectural educator, Virtual Reality maintains an especially important role. It is reported to offer several compelling attributes that enable learners to better develop in the study of Architecture.  Virtual Reality is inherently spatial and possesses the capacity to aid the communication of complex geometric relations in a manner that is not easily repeatable in other means. This ability to perceive 'space' has been heralded as the main reason to employ its widespread usage in the Architectural design studio.

Despite what is becoming an almost global phenomenon, the student's voice is overwhelmingly underrepresented in contemporary scholarship in this field.  This piece of work, therefore, aims to examine how this new field of technology is experienced by students of architecture by asking; how does virtual reality shape the students learning experiences in the architectural design studio? and secondarily; what affordances and constraints do virtual reality impart on the learning experience?

Please arrive on time to avoid disruption for the presenter and other attendees.
