Digitally designing bras for women who’ve undergone breast surgery

Xuxu’s research aims to use digital manufacturing processes to design individualised bras for women who have undergone breast surgery, to address their unique breast measurements and fit requirements.

A well-fitted bra is important to a woman’s health both mentally and physically. It reduces discomfort and pain and can enhance confidence. Yet, at least 80% of women are wearing the incorrect bra size and fit. Women who have undergone breast surgery face even greater challenges when it comes to finding the right bra, and they tend to be less satisfied with the fit and design of the bras available.

Xuxu’s research is a response to the complexity of individual women’s breast geometry and surgery recovery experience. She aims to develop a design system which provides women with individualised digitally manufactured bras, based on women’s unique post-breast surgery requirements. This research will inform bra design recommendations and help guide an iterative design process for better fitting post-breast-surgery bras.
