Wellington a Winner at Schools “Chinese Bridge” Speech Competition
Congratulations to Henry Underhill from Wellington College who took first prize in the 2021 Chinese Bridge national speech competition for senior secondary students on 8 August.
Wellington College student, Henry Underhill, was judged the best Mandarin speaker at the national Confucius Institute Chinese Bridge speech competition held over Zoom on 8 August. He will be one of five New Zealand representatives eligible to participate in the International ‘Chinese Bridge’ speech competition in October.
Henry was not the only student in the Confucius Institute’s region to win. Congratulations also go to second-placed Jaskiran Rahi (Queen Margaret College) in the junior competition and Luca Viscapi (Scots College) and Sean Tomlinson (Rotorua Boys’ High School) for third placings in the senior competition. Wellington College teacher, Feng Yu, received the Best Coach award.
The online event involved 34 students from around New Zealand and was hosted by the Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury. A full list of awards can be found at 2021 National Chinese Bridge Results
The annual Chinese Bridge-Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students has been running for 14 years. It is organised by Chinese Bridge, a programme of the Centre for Language Education and Cooperation in Beijing. There are numerous scholarships to study in China available to participants who do well at the global competition.
