The Victoria University Confucius Institute is working with four North Island community based language schools to promote Chinese language learning. This is in addition to the support that the CI gives to schools to develop their Chinese language programmes. The four such community initiatives are in Wellington, Palmerston North and at Rotorua and Opotiki in the Bay of Plenty. The Wellington Chinese Language School, the Manawatu Chinese

Community Trust, the Rotorua Chinese Association and the Opotiki Community School all offer a range of Chinese learning opportunities for Kiwi students of all ages, including ethnic Chinese students born in New Zealand and in China. The commitment of staff, most of whom work on a voluntary basis, is central to the success of such opportunities for New Zealanders to develop their Chinese language skills. Associated with this the CI supports Chinese language competitions and Chinese cultural performances to mark occasions such as the Mid-Autumn festival . The CI is keen to continue to expand its support for community initiatives that promote Chinese language and culture in the years ahead.
