What is a smart city

Wellington is New Zealand’s leading smart city— technologies are already here and are helping Wellingtonians every day.

Spotlight Lecture Series

November 2017

Wellington is New Zealand’s leading smart city— a city that makes use of technology to improve everything from traffic flows, management of precious natural resources and connections among its residents. From virtual reality, to machine learning, the Internet of things and embedded sensing capabilities, smart city technologies are already here and are helping Wellingtonians every day.

Wellington City Council’s Jenny Rains and Sean Audain will join Victoria University’s digital futures expert Steven Warburton to discuss Wellington’s Smart City strategy, and to consider how technology might be used in future to help city planning, improve street environments, open up opportunities for learning and find more effective responses to social issues in the city.

The Victoria University Spotlight Lecture Series is an opportunity to sample the research undertaken by Victoria academics, in bite-sized lunchtime lectures. The Spotlight Series will take place regularly between 12.30–1.15pm in the Wellington CBD.
